FREE Wholesome Movie - HOBSON'S CHOICE

As most of you know I am NOT a big fan of Romantic Comedies. A bunch of people jumping in and out of bed with each other, vulgar dialogue and more banality than one person can handle. They are usually written by women for women. Behold the "Chick-Flick".

But some years ago I came across a movie while watching Turner Classic Movies called,  "Hobson's Choice" . I had never heard of this movie but it was starring Charles Laughton and John Mills and that was all I needed to know. Then I discovered it was one of the earlier films directed by David Lean who also went on to direct such classics as "Doctor Zhivago", "The Greatest Story Ever Told", "Bridge on the River Kwai" and "Lawrence of Arabia".

"Hobson's Choice" is the story of widower, Henry Hobson, who has three unmarried daughters but he considers them so flighty that he decides he will be the one to choose husbands for them because they are driving him insane and he wants them out of the house. All except his practical, oldest daughter, Maggie who (at thirty years of age) he considers too practical, too useful and too OLD to find a husband for. However, "practical" Maggie has other plans. Let the romantic fun begin!

You can definitely relax with this movie, because it is just a wonderful delight from beginning to end. No graphic scenes, clever and funny dialogue, several plot twists, no bizarre ideologies underneath and lots of REAL life type of romance.

I could gush about this film for a long time but I don't wish to keep you from it a moment longer, except to tell you that it also stars, Brenda de Banzie as Maggie and you will also recognize several others in the supporting cast as well (like Prunella Scales, who later became known as Sybil Faulty of Faulty Towers).

Let's do  a recap of what it takes to make it into this feature.

[Immediately FREE] Wholesome Weekend Date Movie (June 17, 2016)

I know it will seem very odd to recommend a film all about adultery as a "wholesome date" movie, but that's what I'm going to do. (And by now you should be used to me being "odd" )

The film of this week is called, "Brief Encounter" starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson and directed by David Lean. It's the story of two rather ordinary and truly happily married people who meet in a chance encounter and almost accidentally fall in love with each other. Their love is deep and real and completely unexpected by either of them.

I don't usually give a movie a 10 out of 10 rating because that would mean it's "perfect" and  [almost as a matter of principle]  I don't believe anything on earth is totally perfect. But if I feel a movie is close to it, I give it a rating of 9 out of 10 and then use words such as "flawless" or "must see", which is basically splitting hairs, but what I'm going to do in this case.

Even with the poorer quality upload on YouTube, this film is so wonderful, gripping and mesmerizing it's worth viewing (even if in some places you can't even see peoples' heads).
What's interesting is the way the film pulls us along mirrors the way the characters in the film fall in love.

I've searched for this film on YouTube before and never found it. Then suddenly I found it just  'waiting'  for me as a "Recommendation" on YouTube's Home Page. But on YouTube a film can disappear (and be removed) just as quickly as it appears, so you should probably watch it as soon as you can.

And this film is SO good you will probably wish at least 2 viewings. I've watched it 3 times in the past 24 hours and each time I find something new about it to appreciate and it never loses it's power to capture and entrance.

I'm sure everyone will enjoy this film and I hope the same will be true for your weekend.

Sincerely, Laura-Lee

"Hobson'ts Choice" Film Review

I've been known to 'blah, blah, blah" a lot when it comes to film reviews, but all I'm going to say about "Hobson's Choice" is:

YOU MUST SEE THIS FILM!!! You must.

The 1954 version. One of Director David Lean's very first movies. With fantastic performances by    every   -  single    -   person    involved  (and all the married ones too - OLD JOKE).  But this film belongs to  John Mills and Brenda de Banzie. This is a tiny film but a HUGE master piece.

It's only the second time in my life that I've come across a film that I would rate a 10 out of 10. That I wouldn't change in any way. It's for EVERYONE. Don't waste another moment reading this review or doing anything else. Go and find yourself a way of seeing this film and watch it.

I've seen it literally hundreds of times just in the past year and I NEVER get tired of it. (the true test of a Masterpiece)

Why are you still reading THIS , when you could be watching "Hobson's Choice"?!

However, if you wish to buy a copy right now you might have to buy used or pay a lot. I mean, A LOT. Some copies are going for near to $100, because everyone else is figuring out what a great film it is too and wants a copy of their own.
But I figured out what a great film it was first and recorded it with my old, clunky DVD player. And there is NO WAY I'm parting with MY copy! (You snooze, you lose people.) But I at least hope you get to watch it once. Then you can see it in your memory over and over again  - for free.

But take this one piece of advice very seriously:  the first time you watch "Hobson's Choice"  make sure you are in a position to not be disturbed. Get the full effect. Let it wrap you up and make you feel really wonderful. It's what this movie sets out to do and will accomplish if you don't let anything get in the way of that. Are you still here? Go. Go on! Go see this film!

 NOW!

Actually ... why am I still here when I could be watching this film again? Seriously. I'm gone.
