FREE Wholesome Weekend Date Movie - November 11/20

I did not see this film coming, which makes it all the nicer for the surprise. It was a "Youtube recommendation" and listed as a "film-noir" classic. Death and murder. Not exactly what I was looking for to take a break from the way our lives are right now. But the 1949 film,   IMPACT , made quite a one on me.

Briefly, it's the story of a rich couple who are happily married and ...

Ha, ha! That's ALL I'm going to tell you specifically about the plot. However, I will tell you that at its heart it is a sweet, poignant, mystery-thriller. It is filled with plot twists and cool forensics stuff long before CSI came along and made them cool. It also has the Biblical themes of justice, sacrifice, turning the other cheek and good, old-fashioned it's important to tell the truth even when you don't want to. It also shows people going to church and praying! 😯

But let me remind you that even though this is a "wholesome" movie, it contains adult themes and is not meant for younger children. Now let me continue to remind you of my other requirements which are listed below and send you off with a "hope this helps you enjoy yourself for a couple of hours."

I've also decided to add a new element to this feature which has now been running for almost six years.

"Laura-Lee's Cookie of Choice". The appropriate cookie to enhance your viewing pleasure. And since this is a classic film, dark on the outside but filled with sweetness on the inside I MUST recommend (drumroll) Oreos. And I will even go so far as to recommend Oreo Double Stuf as a reflection of this particular film.

I hope you're not sitting next to a chronic talker because even the small details count in this story and you don't want to miss them with a lot of chit-chat. OR making out. So BEHAVE yourselves, but have a good time. Now off you go, dearies.

Sincerely, Laura-Lee

Full of vitamins and minerals. And don't forget the big glass of milk. Moo!

(FREE) Wholesome Weekend Date Movie - OCTOBER 3, 2020!

Just when you think it's safe to come out of the ...

Wait! Let me start again.

Just when I thought I was through with "Immediately Free Wholesome Weekend Date Movie" it rears up again. Either I discover a perfect movie OR somebody mentions it to me, as in,

"When are you going to start doing that Wholesome Date movie thing again?"

Yesterday, it was some of both. I came across the following film when it was recommended to me by YouTube and it's Cookies. How could I say "No" to it?

I had never heard of "Woman's World" which is strange considering what a huge Van Heflin fan I am. And when I discovered it also had Fred McMurray, June Allyson and Lauren Bacall in it too, I figured it would be "wholesome" and also have some GREAT clothing from the 1950s in it too.

However, what I didn't expect was a well acted, clever character study of three marriages in various stages. Clifton Webb portrays the head of a huge car company with headquarters in New York who brings three medium level employees (and their wives) to the Big Apple for the weekend in order to evaluate and choose one to take over for the CEO who recently died. It is a high pressure but lucrative position that they must compete for and we learn all sorts of things along the way about people and what makes us all tick. And there is a good amount of romance, nice clothes and some cool, old cars too.  As well as a few plot twists and a happy-ish, though unexpected ending.

And so I finished it and thought, "Wholesome Weekend Date Movie" will see yet another reprise.

Let me remind you of what a movie requires to make the grade for the WWDM.

A Believable Man Lives an Unbelievable Life (Book Review)

The Unbelievable Life of a Country Boy: from Country Plowboy to Lt. Colonel by Age 30The Unbelievable Life of a Country Boy: from Country Plowboy to Lt. Colonel by Age 30 by Peter Newton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What a great and refreshing life adventure this book is! I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review and I am most grateful for it. In fact, I'm thinking of going to get myself a paper/hard copy version of it too.

This is the story of a remarkable man, although I doubt he thinks so, who makes no apologies about the way he lived his long life. He doesn't swear or drink, he believes devoutly in God, was married to only one woman his entire life, loves his family, and just happens to have survived both the Great Depression and World War 2. Whew!

His memoirs are not the act of a great writer, although obviously a very intelligent person, but rather the desire of a sincere individual to leave a legacy in writing. Much of what you first think of as typos has been left in on purpose as a reflection of the way he actually speaks as he weaves his various anecdotal tales filled with wisdom and humor. It is fascinating to learn how things were done in his days and he doesn't shy from giving us details knowing that these ways are foreign to us now and will be even more so to those who are reading it in the future.

Although it will never be considered great literature, it is written by a great person, which is so much more important. There is nothing profane or graphic in this story. Safe for even the most sensitive of readers as Peter Jack Newton calls you near and tells the stories that make up the fabric of his life as only he can. And if you don't think all that classifies him as "Remarkable" yet, consider the Foreward of his book written by all his children which permeates their continuing respect, pride, and love for the man who is their father.

Like meeting someone who is unique and heroic in all the best ways, The Unbelieve Life of a Country Boy is just exactly that. And fits right into my own vision of everything a life can be as I often describe my own journey as "an ordinary life led by an extraordinary God." Whether you love history and memoirs or not, this book is definitely worth your time because Lt. Colonel Newton has something to say and pass on to you. Don't keep him waiting.

Sincerely, Laura-Lee

FREE Books: Clean Historical Romance Kindle

I've been roaming around Amazon and found 3 FREE ebook downloads for Christian Historical Romance stories.

These all had high ratings and good reviews in both Canada and America. You need to have the Kindle app  (which is also free) or a Kindle device so these can be downloaded.
But other than that, just choose and click.

I like to tell you about free or extremely cheap books from all different genres on a regular basis, so it may be worth your time to get the Kindle app downloaded on your device if free books interest you.

Follow the Links below. They are to the CANADIAN Amazon site but there is a link to Amazon.com on each book's page. (Top right corner)

These books are currently being given away NOW as a part of a promotion, so you will need to jump on these offers. I don't know how long it will last.

Also, you might like to leave a short review or at least a star rating as a "Thank You" for the book. Even if you didn't like it.

But they all sound interesting although not overly complex. These are meant to be fast, easy, enjoyable clean stories.  If you have some free time why not spend it with a good book and your imagination?

And don't forget to visit the Master's Peace Theatre blog later in the week when we post short story, "Laura's Choice" by guest contributor Werner Lind who is the author of the popular Christian vampire book, "Lifeblood".

Thanks for dropping in for a blog visit. I hope I was helpful.

Sincerely, Laura-Lee

[Immediately FREE] Wholesome Weekend Date Movie (July 30, 2016)

This week before I picked the film to recommend, I was looking over my list of  "requirements" again. I'm not sure if this movie possesses all of them, but since I was watching it yet again,   I thought, "What better reason is there to recommend this film to others than that I, myself watch it repeatedly?" (even if I'm not sure why).

On the surface it seems like it will be just a piece of 1950's Technicolor fluff, but first impressions aren't always accurate.

"All That Heaven Allows" is the story of a middle-aged widow (portrayed by Jane Wyman), with two grown children who lives in a small, conservative American town. She falls in love with her much younger gardener (portrayed by Rock Hudson) who is very different than the type of man her husband was and the type of man she is used to. But they inevitably fall in love and decide to get married which causes the town to go into "gossip-overload"  and they have to weather a lot of opposition.

Rock Hudson
examines the tree that "only grows by a house full of love."

This film is interesting and demonstrates the same attributes as the love affair at the heart of it: a tender, playfulness and enduring peacefulness. Not to mention witty dialogue, a great supporting cast (led by the always wonderful Agnes Moorehead) and a perfect 'snapshot' of 1950's small town, middle class, conservative America.

(as Agnes Moorehead looks on)

Simply put, I enjoy this movie and feel good when I watch it.  I hope you do too.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely, Laura-Lee  (Rahn)

[Immediately FREE] Wholesome Weekend Date Movie (June 17, 2016)

I know it will seem very odd to recommend a film all about adultery as a "wholesome date" movie, but that's what I'm going to do. (And by now you should be used to me being "odd" )

The film of this week is called, "Brief Encounter" starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson and directed by David Lean. It's the story of two rather ordinary and truly happily married people who meet in a chance encounter and almost accidentally fall in love with each other. Their love is deep and real and completely unexpected by either of them.

I don't usually give a movie a 10 out of 10 rating because that would mean it's "perfect" and  [almost as a matter of principle]  I don't believe anything on earth is totally perfect. But if I feel a movie is close to it, I give it a rating of 9 out of 10 and then use words such as "flawless" or "must see", which is basically splitting hairs, but what I'm going to do in this case.

Even with the poorer quality upload on YouTube, this film is so wonderful, gripping and mesmerizing it's worth viewing (even if in some places you can't even see peoples' heads).
What's interesting is the way the film pulls us along mirrors the way the characters in the film fall in love.

I've searched for this film on YouTube before and never found it. Then suddenly I found it just  'waiting'  for me as a "Recommendation" on YouTube's Home Page. But on YouTube a film can disappear (and be removed) just as quickly as it appears, so you should probably watch it as soon as you can.

And this film is SO good you will probably wish at least 2 viewings. I've watched it 3 times in the past 24 hours and each time I find something new about it to appreciate and it never loses it's power to capture and entrance.

I'm sure everyone will enjoy this film and I hope the same will be true for your weekend.

Sincerely, Laura-Lee

[Immediately FREE] Wholesome Weekend Date Movie (May 6, 2016)

Almost everyone knows about the Cary Grant/Deborah Kerr film, "An Affair to Remember", but did you know it's actually a remake of a film simply called, "Love Affair" from a generation earlier. And it's my pick of the week for the "Wholesome Date Movie".

There is something so much more lasting, deep and appealing in this original version. I suppose that's why Hollywood keeps trying to either remake or capitalize on this story in some way.
And even though it's the oldest version of the story (from 1939) it's actually the most realistic, due mostly to the superb acting by the main characters portrayed by Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne.

Charles Boyer & Irene Dunne

The story of a man and woman who are each being "kept" by their richer lovers find each other and fall in love during an ocean voyage home to New York. They know that for them to be together they need to find a way to make their own money, but more than that, they each feel the need to gain back their self-respect in order to have something of inner value to offer to each other.

Also, in this original version, they have not removed all references to God and actually show the two main characters praying together in the grandmother's small chapel. This only serves to deepen and enhance our understanding of the story, because you can't truly find love and redemption without God being involved in some way.

I've admitted I'm not the biggest fan of romantic movies, but this one got to me. I don't just recommend it for those who are newly dating, but even more for those who experiencing problems in their relationship and/or marriage. This story is all about second chances. You come away knowing that "love for a lifetime" not only exists, but is within the grasp of anyone who wants it enough. Even the fact that this one is entitled "LOVE Affair" because it's all about "LOVE", while the Cary Grant/Deborah Kerr version doesn't even have the word "Love" in the title.

But make no mistake, even though this film actually has practical advice to make love last, it is not a trip to the Marriage Counsellor. It's still a witty, inspiring, often funny and beautifully told love story. As near to flawless as any film can be.

"As near to heaven as is earthly possible" (L-L)

So dim the lights and let this one take you to a wonderful place of peace and possibilities. Hopefully you will find a way to be sitting next to and sharing it with the person you love the most (or the person you want to love the most).

I recommend it to you with my prayers and my heart.

A Face in the Crowd: Film Review (& FREE Viewing Now at YouTube)

ANDY GRIFFITH
"A Face in the Crowd"

If all of you only remember Andy Griffith as the relaxed, town sheriff, best friend to Don Knotts & Dad to Opie, then you are missing out on something great and rare: his film performance in the movie ""A Face in the Crowd".

Also starring Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau. I've just added it to  "Complete Films Play List" (FREE from MY YouTube Channel) and thought it deserved a bit of a promotion just for itself. (As I did when I reviewed the movie, "The Trap" Film which is also part of my same list over at YouTube).

(Here's what Pete Hammond thinks too and it's a good summary of the film)

Hammond On Andy Griffith: Not Just Another 'Face In The Crowd'

UPDATED: Andy Griffith gave the greatest performance of his career the first time he ever stepped in front of a film camera. In fact his portrayal of country bumpkin-turned rabidly ambitious and menacing media force in Elia Kazan’s1957 masterpiece A Face In The Crowd is not only one of the great screen performances of that decade, but just about any other decade too. It’s almost criminal more people have not seen this film, a flop in its time but a hugely influential movie in the intervening years.

I agree that it's a "MUST SEE" Movie. It's Free and available right now. So, uh, ... why are you still reading this?

 ~~ Laura-Lee  (RAHN)

P.S. Whatever you do, make sure you are NOT disturbed for the last 30 minutes of this film! (You'll thank me later for this advice) L-L

Thomas Kinkade: The Sell-Out

(THOMAS KINKADE DIED APRIL 6, 2012)

Thomas Kinkade Official Site

Thomas Kinkade first came to my attention in the early 1990’s when I worked for a Christian organization called, “Focus on the Family” at their Canadian offices in Vancouver, Canada.
I was immediately drawn into his use of light in his paintings and was not surprized that he became known as “The Painter of Light”. His actual paintings were a little too expensive for what I could afford, but I got a calendar for Christmas that year which featured his paintings. So as each month passed, I would tape the picture from the previous month to my bedroom walls until I had 12 copies of his paintings hanging all over the place. At the end of the year I was hoping I would get his next calendar for the following year.

As the years passed it seemed like Thomas Kinkade was EVERYWHERE! As well as his paintings adorning everything from tote-bags to coasters, he had written a myriad of books and seemed to be selling, selling, selling everything that had even the merest connection to him. I read his entire “Cape Light” series of books and watched his “products” grow and spread throughout the world.
I read one of his books that I still have to this day and have read and re-read it several times. It is called, “Lightposts for Living: The Art of Choosing a Joyful Life”. (1999) It was titled perfectly because it  gave practical advice on how to bring joy into your daily and sometimes hum-drum life. He proposed that “joy” was not something that simply fell out of the sky into your lap, but you had to work at in order to have it part of your life. As I read the circumstances surrounding his death and the last years of his life, it seemed that he had stopped taking his own advice about joy somewhere along the line.

No doubt you will hear in the next months all the bad things that were going on in Kinkade’s life. He claimed to be a Christian which means he had a bulls-eye on his back to be aimed at by every person who has an axe to grind with Jesus. His passing will only enhance that desire in some people. Especially because he will not be here to defend himself.
Perhaps Thomas lost sight of what God wanted him to do with his talent …
Perhaps he became caught up in the money …
Perhaps it was too important to him that he become famous …
Perhaps he lost sight of how important his family is …
Perhaps he let his relationship with his wife slide until it was too difficult for him to repair …
Perhaps he wished to follow his own path more than the path that God had marked out for him …
All that may be true but I do know this: when Jesus died on the cross he paid the price for every one of Thomas Kinkade’s sins (as well as all of mine and yours too). In all the years I knew of Thomas Kinkade, I never once heard him deny that he was a Christian or that he loved Jesus. His soul was a sell-out for Jesus, regardless of the sins he committed along the way. And if he accepted Jesus, then I know Jesus accepted him!
Simply put, Thomas Kinkade is in heaven with Jesus and all the problems he had here mean nothing to him now. He is seeing God in the “splendour of his majesty” and many other things that he could probably never accurately paint, even if he had been the greatest artist to ever walk this planet.

But I wonder that, even with all the critics he had throughout his career, he still sold huge amounts of his paintings. I don’t believe all of that was just because he was clever with his use of light. He had a way of freezing a moment in time that had passed or maybe had never existed except in his mind. But in that frozen moment we found something we were drawn to. Something that we rarely or cannot find anymore. The beauty found in quietness and simple things. Each of his paintings or books had a gentleness to them. They depicted a time or place when people cared for one another and most people knew that God was watching out for them. And because of their faith in God, they had reserves of strength beyond humanity and encounters with compassion that is missing in our daily lives now-a-days.

So I thank God for the works of Thomas Kinkade which remind me WHO made me, WHY I am here, and WHAT I have to look forward to. And to Thomas Kinkade for making me pause and remember that, the way God was in the “olden days” is the way he is right now. Today.
And I won’t forget to say a prayer for his family that has been temporarily left behind and remember that the “painter of light” is now standing beside the “Creator of Light”.

“ And God said, ‘Let there be light.’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.”
(GENESIS 1:3)

“ In him was life and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.”
“ He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.”
(JOHN 1: 4-5, 7)

“ When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘ I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ “             (JOHN 8:12)
