Star Trek and Christianity (Updated Apr. 2022)

I started watching the original Star Trek literally while I was still in diapers. (My Mom was a big fan). It's deep in my mind the concept of "Beaming People" from one place to another. I became a Christian 12 years later and read the story of  Philip and the Eunuch and how SUDDENLY Philip disappeared and showed up elsewhere and thought, "Wow. God did it BEFORE Star Trek".

I considered death for the first time while watching Star Trek on my tummy in front of the TV years later in syndication here in Canada. William Wyndom (Commodore Decker) had just flown the space shuttle into the doomsday device and sacrificed himself. I thought, "What happened to him next?!!" The thought of so vibrant a person just ceasing to exist seemed unthinkable. So where was he a split second after the shuttle was destroyed?

I learned about the Rapture from a bumper sticker that said, "Beam me up, Lord!" with the reference of

   1 Corinthians 15:51-52

Did the original Star Trek look for aliens to save us? NO! Captain Kirk was going to save us by turning "death into a fighting chance for life" (Bones). Mr. Spock's "Live long and prosper" hand salute was taken from little, Jewish Leonard Nimoy peeking at a secret orthodox Jewish ceremony and a blessing the Rabbis were giving. Fortunately for me, at that point, Star Trek may have been Humanist but it wasn't "secular humanist" yet because almost everyone in the 1960s believed (and basically assumed) that the God of the Bible was REAL. Of course that had completely changed when Picard and his Next Generation showed up to "protect sentient life" at all costs.

But somewhere in my teen years I put together the Rapture, beaming people and added the abduction story of Betty and Barney Hill to the mix and realized that aliens "beaming" Christians into their ships (probably to do all sorts of nasty sexual experiments on us) was going to be satan's excuse for the Rapture and probably received with a lot of glee from those who think "Suits the hate-mongers right. Exactly what they deserve. Good riddance to bad rubbish!"

So let me conclude my Star Trek history/Bible lesson by saying, "If you are expecting ANYBODY but Jesus to save you, you will find yourself in heaps of trouble the day you depart this life", because Deforest Kelly (Dr.McCoy) is dead, Leonard Nimoy (Mr.Spock) is dead, James Doohan (Scotty) is dead and William Shatner spends his last days scared to death of death. Even Doomsday devices "die".

The Tribulation is about to come and it will make these hard times look like R n R on Risa. Get on board, set your course with Jesus, and discover what the "undiscovered country" is really like in the pages of the Bible. Then make sure you always have your "hailing frequencies open" to the Holy Spirit.

The "Rapture"

"For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.  After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.  Therefore encourage one another with these words." (1 Thessalonians 4:17-19)

Love always, Laura-Lee

"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27)

"If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,  for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 10:9-12

I also have a blog that discusses current world events and Bible prophecy. After forty years of doing this, I am convinced we are finally in the last days of life as we know it on planet earth. I invite you to join me there with the goal of " being prepared, not scared."

A Graphic Look at Canadians at War

Canada at War: A Graphic History of World War TwoCanada at War: A Graphic History of World War Two by Paul Keery
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Graphic books are a new format for me and this is the first one that is not a novel. It looks at the role Canada's military had in World War 2. But since the text had very little flow, it felt like the illustrations are the driving force of this book. The text is only there to set the scene or give some added information. World War 2 is such a massive subject that there truly is no way to get at it in such a short book, so it helped immensely that I had a solid knowledge of the topic.

Canada at War jumps around and highlights a specific person, then a specific battle, then a specific division of the military, and then suddenly mixes in a bunch of statistics. And if you don't particularly like this style of illustration, you probably won't get much from this book. However, I did like the illustrations and once I approached the book as a series of vignettes about Canada's involvement in World War 2, I was able to appreciate it. I especially liked it when they highlighted the sacrificial contributions of someone who won some award for courage or valor. But the statistics have their story to tell too.

Because Canada and Britain worked so closely during World War 2, if you are from England you might enjoy this book too. But it will appeal predominantly to Canadians, although I was sorry to see the huge contributions made by French Canadians almost completely ignored. But like I said, this is predominantly the illustrator's Show and Tell and what he considered important and inspired him to draw.

If you're looking for a page-turning, thrill-ride, this "ain't" it. But if you want to see some wonderful artwork, learn a bit more about Canada's involvement in WW 2 and feel some Canadian pride, then this will be a good fit for you. I got my copy from the library, which may be a good idea to help you decide if you like the illustrations too before you pay money for a paperback copy of it. Some people may consider it dry, but after sitting through years of Canadian History classes that truly were dry, this graphic, historical ebook is like a trip to the oasis. I didn't come to Canada at War with any specific expectations and when I just accepted it for what it is, a short glance into my country at war through the eyes and talents of a couple of people, I found it interesting and enjoyable. Definitely not for everyone, but for me, I considered it well worth my time.

I should mention that due to the nature of the topic I would not recommend it for children. However, considering the restrained depiction of the horrors of war, I feel okay to recommend it to those who consider themselves "sensitive" readers.

Thanks for reading my review.

Sincerely, Laura-Lee

My Memories: The Alan Thicke Show

Before Alan Thicke was known to American audiences, he hosted a talk show here in Canada. One of my fondest memories was the day my brother and I went to watch one of his shows being taped at the studio in Vancouver (BC), Canada. (BCTV on Lougheed Highway)
Alan Thicke Show - Canada 1980's
Interviews John Ritter

I LOVED Alan but I was able to talk my brother into taking me because one of his guests was Kirstie Alley, "Star Trek: Wrath of Khan" had just come out and my brother was an ultimate "Trekkie".

I found out a LOT about how TV "stuff" was put together that day. (For example, they filmed not one but three shows with the same audience. One right after the other.)

I found out a LOT about how my brother was "put together" that day too.

What's also amazing about my memories of that day?
(Yes. This is a "flashback" within a "flashback".)

About one week ago I was praying and that entire day spent at the "Alan Thicke Show" came back to me in vivid and minute detail.
I remember specifically thinking, "Boy. My memories certainly are jumping all over the place."
I prayed for my brother but I didn't think to pray for Alan.

Because I've been a Christian for so long, people often ask me how I know when Jesus is talking to me. Well, apparently I don't hear Him a lot of the time. But I don't think it's necessarily or completely a bad thing for me to realize I'm nowhere near as "holy" as I think I am.

March 1, 1947 -
December 13, 2016

I'm sure Alan is okay now. I have prayed for him many times throughout the years and I'm sure other people (who did hear the Lord's prompting) helped pray him on his journey into the next world of God's kingdom.

As for me, I've been reminded that when Jesus communicates with his children He often comes from "left field". (In a way or place or time that is unexpected.) So I need to watch (listen) more closely for that.

Thanks to Alan, my brother, and the Lord for that wonderful day with wonderful memories and the "warm fuzzies" it brings freshly and fondly to me.

And to Jesus, the "King of kings and LORD of lords" who never changes, but makes sure that I constantly am.
